Gender Criticism

"The Chrysanthemums" by John Steinbeck is a short story in where the author uses gender criticism. Throughout the story Steinbeck symbolizes women as weakness. The story is mainly about a married couple who work and live in a farm. The man who is portrayed as the "strong" figure and does the hard job like working out in the fields. The women who is portrayed as "weakness" work gardening the flowers. At one point in the story the husband admires the way she gardens so well and how she would do such a great job out in the field but never puts her to the job because she's a women and women are "weak". Meanwhile in the story Steinbeck describes her as a "blocked and heavy" women who will certainly be able to do work in the field like she her self would like to.
